The Federal Skilled Trades Program is designed for skilled workers seeking to obtain permanent residency (PR) by demonstrating qualifications in a skilled trade. This program, part of the broader Federal Skilled Worker Program, has specific eligibility criteria.
Eligibility requirements include having a minimum of two years of full-time work experience (or equivalent part-time experience) in a skilled trade within the five years leading up to the application. The skilled work experience must align with the required NOC category and is only considered valid if the applicant was qualified to practice the trade in the location where the experience was gained. Additionally, work experience must be paid.
Acceptable NOC Groups for work experience include:
- Major Group 72, technical trades and transportation officers (excluding Sub-Major Group 726)
- Major Group 73, general trades
- Major Group 82, supervisors in natural resources, agriculture, and related production
- Major Group 83, occupations in natural resources
- Major Group 92, processing, manufacturing, and utilities supervisors
- Major Group 93, central control and process operators (excluding Sub-Major Group 932)
- Minor Group 6320, cooks, butchers, and bakers
- Unit Group 62200, chefs
Candidates must also provide a valid job offer or a certificate of qualification. A valid job offer must entail full-time employment for no less than one year. Alternatively, a certificate of qualification in the relevant skilled trade is required, which must be issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial, or federal authority. Candidates must have successfully passed the certification exam and meet all requirements for practicing their trade in the respective province or territory. Each province has its own certification requirements, and there may be a need to travel to assess the trade or to work with a Canadian employer for experience and training.
Language proficiency must be demonstrated through tests that are valid for two years from the date of the result and must remain valid at the time of applying for PR.
